About our Music Program
St. Thomas’s has a long history of musical excellence, dating back to the 1850s; in fact, the congregation purchased an organ even before there was a building. The noted American composer Charles Ives served as organist here in the 1890s.
The St. Thomas's Choir of volunteers and professionals sings at most services during the academic year, leading congregational singing and offering works drawn from the vast repertoire of sacred choral music. All of our choir members are nurtured in musical growth while preparing for their liturgical role as leaders of worship.
The parish supports the musical endeavors of members of the local community by making its facilities available to various groups and individuals for rehearsals, performances and recordings. St. Thomas's is the home of the Connecticut Gay Men's Chorus, which has rehearsed here since 1986.
The organ is in the American Romantic style, incorporating pipework from earlier instruments by Steere & Turner, Hall, and Aeolian-Skinner. There are 61 ranks spread across three manuals and pedals, and the instrument was last rebuilt with tonal additions and updated components in 1991.
